Separate a reporting problem from a generation problem
A blank app, a lost internet connection and an inverter that has stopped producing electricity can look similar on a phone. Record what you can see on the monitoring service and any safely accessible display. Tell us when it changed and whether the building has recently had electrical, internet or roof work.
Missing readings do not by themselves establish that the whole system has failed. Equally, a connected app is not proof that every part of the installation is working correctly. An investigation needs the equipment details and the actual symptoms.
Compare like with like
Generation varies with weather, daylight, seasons and shading. A single poor day is a weak basis for diagnosing a fault. Look at a longer period and compare with the system's previous performance where records are available. Note any trees, buildings or roof changes that may have affected sunlight.
Send monitoring screenshots rather than relying on “it seems lower”. Useful information includes the date range, units shown, inverter status and any error message. You do not need to interpret the technical terms before contacting Jelvis.
Gather the information that speeds up a visit
- The inverter and battery make and model, if known.
- Installation date and the original installer or handover pack.
- Photos of accessible displays, labels and error messages.
- When the problem began and whether it is constant or intermittent.
- Recent electrical work, roof repairs or monitoring changes.
- Any visible bird activity or damage observed safely from ground level.
Keep equipment covers closed and do not access the roof yourself. If you notice smoke, a burning smell or other immediate signs of danger, treat it as a safety issue rather than continuing routine monitoring checks.
Does the system need cleaning?
Cleaning should be based on the location and condition of the installation, not an automatic assumption that every system needs the same schedule. Significant dirt, debris or bird activity may justify an assessment. Safe access and the panel manufacturer's instructions matter.
A cleaning visit is not a substitute for electrical fault finding. If the inverter is reporting an error or generation has stopped, share that information before booking work so the scope matches the problem.
Repair and upgrade are different decisions
Discuss the investigation and proposed repair before replacing equipment. If you also want a battery, more panels or improved monitoring, ask for the upgrade work to be identified separately. A change to an existing system needs a compatibility and electrical assessment.
Manufacturer warranty cover and installation workmanship cover are separate. Your original quotation, contract and equipment documents set the applicable terms. A repair may involve charges even where part of the equipment is under warranty, so responsibilities and costs should be agreed.
Jelvis support for existing systems
We discuss fault finding, monitoring issues, battery additions and upgrades for suitable solar PV installations across West Sussex and surrounding areas. Visit our maintenance and repairs page, review battery options or send the details you have. Missing model numbers need not stop your first enquiry.
